Rainbow Hair: The Special Appeal of the Clown Wig

Why is it that clowns for the courlephobic (those with a fear of clowns) will shun the white face paint, the red noses, and the big shoes, but have no problems wearing a clown wig that gives them hair of shades not known to mankind through any natural means? These wigs, for whatever reason, just aren't as scary, even to those who are afraid of clowns, as the other accoutrements are, and these clowns know it. You'll never see a clown for the courlephobic wearing the red nose, but colored hair--a clown wig--is a different ball park all together.

In fact, there's something bright and fun about a wig. What child hasn't colored hair green and purple in their coloring books? Odd shades of hair are just that; odd. There's nothing natural about a clown wig. Yet at the same time, it seems to be a natural fantasy for children. Far from being afraid of it, they welcome it, they even love it. And, for this reason, a clown's wig is the standard attire of every clown, even those who do without the red nose and the big feet.

Carrying this a step further, a clown's wig is a fun dress up item for a child's dress up wardrobe. Anyone who has ever watched the glee with which a child gets their face and hair painted at a festival or carnival knows that clown wigs are a fun and exciting part of a child's world. In fact, a clown wig makes an excellent birthday present or even party favor for young children (generally ages three to six will be most impressed with a clown wig). Almost without exception, no matter how your child feels about clowns in general, they will love the rainbow hair of a wig.
